Categorizing Titles Sequences

Titles on a black screen

• Most common type of title sequence 

• Involves different kinds of type face on a black background 
• Usually a white typeface is used on a black background to create a high contrast
• Studios used them because they're low budget
• They can offer a simple, uncomplicated way to include institutional information at the beginning of a film 

 Titles on still images

• This category of title sequence is more elaborate than simple white text on a black background
• Historically title cards developed to title cards developed to include hand drawn borders and other images 
• This category of title sequence indicated a move past just text but a way to incorporate text with a visual image to hint at the tone or genre of the film 
• The development of titles accompanied by still images coincides with credits getting longer to incorporate more than just the name of the studio and film maker
• with this type of title sequence, studios were able to develop more elaborate title sequences and recognized their contribution to the film.
• using music and images in the background hints the theme and genre of the film

Titles over moving images

• integrates the credit titles with the moving image behind and sound and usually there is no dialogue.
• moving images serves to offer - metaphor and/or - a narrative thread to help introduce the tone or storyline of the film to the audience.

Titles using animations or motion

• in the late 1990's, the use of animation in title sequences became very popular
• the titles them selves become part of the moving images and incorporates together with the images we see
• these types of title sequences require a lot of digital and stylized editing

Narrative title sequence

- The titles are integrated into the moving images in some way and begin as the film itself begins. this might be as a long establishing shot or as part of a series of establishing shots

- The titles are integrated with the beginning of the film

Discrete title sequences

the titles are integrated into the moving images but it isn't entirely clear what the film plot or storyline is. This type of title sequence helps to set the tone and gives clues to what can happen later in the film where we have an 'ahh' moment when we realize the significance of the titles.
- Stand alone sequence, series of images that may be related to the film BUT not an actual part of the narrative/film.

Stylized title sequence

- These are highly stylized title sequences. They can be a mixture of the other 2 sub-categories in terms of what we see but, the moving image AND the title credits have been stylized (with filters, motion etc.) to create a combined effect.
- Can be a mixture of the 2, edited to create a combined effect (lots of effect/filters/motion etc.)

Task 9

SAUL BASS

Saul bass was an American graphic designer and filmmaker best known for his design of motion picture title sequences, film posters and corporate logos. During his 40-year career Bass worked for some of Hollywood's most prominent filmmakers, including Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese.
Saul Bass is one of the most famous title sequence directors, not only did he make title sequences but also award-winning films such as West Side Story.

Order of the title sequence

This is how the order of the titles on our title sequence will appear. We made it that order as it's an independent production film and also because of the conventions of how the titles are meant to appear.

Editing questions

What we think went well with editing?
We knew what order our title sequence should go in. We included a variety of different sounds for our title sequence including foley sounds, soundtrack and etc.

What we think went bad with editing?
What we think went bad with editing was the time management, this is because we didn't follow our editing schedule that we had planned already.

What we would do next time with our editing?
Stick to our editing schedule and also make sure that everyone in the group is assigned a task involving the editing for the title sequence.

Soundtrack for the title sequence

This is the new and more improved version of the soundtrack we're going to include in our title sequence.

Film poster

This is the film poster we created for our title sequence. We involved our main characters in the title sequence and also the release date for Street Love. This is for the audience to be more informed about the title sequence and to also get hyped up by the film poster.

Website

As a group, we made a website for our title sequence for the audience to view and make their voice heard to us and to also get to know the cast more. The website is called http://ab05835.wix.com/streetlove .

Voice over

In our title sequence we have included a voice over at the beginning of the title sequence, this is because so that the audience can understand the story of the main character as it's one of the ways to show the main character's story by using a voice over at the beginning of the title sequence. The idea of using a voice over came from the inspiration of La Haine. La Haine is a teen movie which is also a youth drama. This was a major inspiration as Street Love is also a teen movie and also a youth drama. This is the voice over we'll be using...

MEMORY CARDS/SD CARDS;
The memory & SD cards have allowed us to be able to save all our film footage we have filmed. the memory cards & SD cards have enough memory to allow us to film loads and loads of scenes for our title sequence.



Video Drive -
Each group was given a video drive with the group number on it . this video drive allowed us to save all our filming work that we have done. its very handy because if we lost any footage on the  This is the video drive and allows you to also save any work or filming you have done. it is like a memory card but this is built into the camera and nothing is added. The bigger the drive the more footage that can be filmed so this was useful because it helped us develop our project by allowing us to film more.

Editing Pictures

 

 

Location

We will use a location that will help set the mood of a "shady" character selling illegal items without wanting to be spotted.
So we have chosen a park in Islington which is ideal because it is very spacious and has loads of trees which adds a mysterious feel.

Foley sounds

The foley sounds we're going to use for our title sequence are coming for gargeband. We are using foley sounds to capture the sounds we would normally hear when in that environments. The foley sounds that we are going to include in the title sequence are going to be cars going past as well as clothes getting put on. This is because we want to emphasis the surroundings as the camera wasn't able to pick up the sounds.

These are the foley sounds that we will be using. Both will be used separately, none overlapping.
