Filming

30/01/15

This was our first day of filming. In our first day of filming, we filmed the one of the main characters in our title sequence. What we shot was Kai walking down the street on the phone and also Kai going to meet someone to supply drugs. With this we managed to film him looking suspicious. All the shots for 30/01/15 were taking inside a building despite one of our characters being outside, this was because it was drizzling outside and we had remembered our risk assessment for film which was if it rains, we would not film for that day or gather together other shots.

 Kai outside on the phone.

 Esther filming Liam playing Kai.

Jibi filming Liam playing Kai.

03/02/2015

This was our second day for filming and was very successful because the weather was good enough for us to film.

Kai while filming.

Esther going over the shots she took.

Jibi filming.

This was our third day of filming. In our third day of filming, we filmed the room scene of our main two characters (Jade&Kai) in our title sequence.

Analysis Of tittle sequence

Analysis of Title Sequences

I went on to www.artofthetitle.com and watched two title sequence which were:

Skyfall
The film Skyfall is a Animation and Motion title sequence.
The credits we see are:
1. Indent             2.Protagonist Actor
3. Name of film   4. Co - Producers
5. Script Supervisor  6. Sound recordist
8. Eletrical Supervisor 9. Second unit assistant director
10. Make up         11. Hair
12. Wardrobe       13. Publicity and Marketing
14. Promotions     15. Stills photographer
16. VFX producer 17. Casting
18. Costume         19. Editor
20. Theme song    21. Written by
22. Produced by    23. Directed by
The font type used in this title sequence looked like a Century Gothic and it was white due to the dark colours used in the background to make it visible and vibrant. The font was in the different areas of the screen, its in the middle, the bottom right and the bottom left. behind the font we see the animation and motion of James Bond when he got shot at the beginning of the film and it hints some locations which is in the film. Also a skull was appearing on screen frequently which symbolises death and danger which can leave the audience thinking and predicting. The Cabin in the Woods

The cabin in the woods title sequence is a combination of animation and motion with moving images. The credits we see are

1. Indent              2. Production Company
3. Owner of film  4. Name of film
5. Cast                  6. VFX Supervisor
7. Music Supervisor  8. Music by
9. Costume designer  10. Produced by
11. Written by       12. Directed by

The font used in the title sequence was red and bold for the name of the movie it looked like an IMPACT font all in red bold and in capitals, the red could be symbolising blood and danger as it is a horror/thriller movie. We are introduced to a couple of actors in the movie such as the scientist, the 'blondie', the 'geek' & her brother with his friend. from this I could tell that they are the protagonists in the movie. I picked this sequence because its a sub-genre of teen drama, also I like watching the genre Horror/thriller, comedy and action which in this film it is jammed packed.

The type of title sequence was a moving image sequence, i know this because the protagonist in the film was in a train when it was moving thats when the title sequence started.

The production companies associated with Save The Last Dance was Paramount Pictures, MTV & MTV films, these are all mainstream productions, Paramount pictures have produced films like Mean Girls, Titanic & Flight, while MTV films have produced Coach Carter, The Fighting Temptations & Footloose .

The plot/storyline is introduced when the main character Sara (Julia Stiles) is on her way to her father's house in Chicago after her mum died on her way to a university audition. sara has a passion for dance and faces some obstacles along the way to top, the storyline/plot is developed during the movie while encounting problems with her rivals and her boyfriend Derrick.

The main characters of this movie are: Sara (Julia Stiles), Chenille (Kerry Washington), Derrick (Sean Patrick Thomas) and Malakai (Fredro Starr).

Sean Patrick Thomas
Julia Stiles
Kerry Washington

Fredro Starr

The social groups were introduced into are working class people and students who live in the slums of Chicago. Stereotyping was used in this film for black and white people, black people was hip-hop/rap music, gangster dress code, guns and violence, break dancing, girls being a lone parent in their senior year of high-school and quoting from the movie "black peoples life is madness & mayhem". the stereotyping used for white people was, irritated by other ethnic backgrounds, snobby behaviour, opera and jazz music and ballet. Although the stereotyping for white people stopped during the course of the film, however the stereotyping for black people continued.

The teenagers have conflict with the adults in the film like how we expect a teen film to be. They argue and ignore the adults just show that they are a teenager. but during the course of the movie its changes and they start to be open to the adults in the movie and change their behaviour towards them.

CAMERA !!: there were a lot of different shots during the movie such as:

  • Close ups
  • Match cut
  • Two shot
  • Wide shot
  • Long shot
  • Tracking
  • 180 degree pan
  • Over the shoulder shot
The film mostly contained close ups, two-shot and over the shoulder shot. close up's show how the teenagers reactions to things and their facial and body language. Over the shoulder shot illustrates to the audience who the character is talking to and how they react. Two-shot was a common one as well, because its a teenage drama, most of the characters would be with there friends so the camera will show the other characters in the shot so the audience would know who they hang out with.

MISE EN SCENE - (LOCATION&LIGHTING):

  • Baggy Clothing early 21st century style
  • High school - Location
  • Night club - Location
  • Ghetto/slum neighbourhood - location
  • Guns
  • Old rusty cars
  • Natural/dull lighting

EDITING !:

  • Screen time : Sara and Derrick ( Sara has more screen time than Derrick)
  • Continuing Editing
  • Slow motion - After Sara's Juilliard (College/university) dance audition
SOUND !!:
  • Hip-Hop/Rap music
  • Diegetic Sound - from the Dj's deck and radio player
  • Non-diegetic sound - A soothing, sympathy instrumental and Smooth, romantic and affectionate instrumental

Research into a teen film I've watched

Name of film: The Fault In Our Stars
Sub genre: Drama

The list of credits and the order they appear in:

  • Ident
  • Ident
  • Name of film
The producer for The Fault In Our Stars is Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen. This also happens to be a mainstream production for the film.
Some plots introduced in the film opening was a support group.
The main characters in the film are Hazel and Augustus. How they are introduced to the audience would be as youthful.
How the teens interact with adults would be the way we would expect them to react to adults and this is as not paying any attention to them. Hazel is seen not engaging with her parents when they are speaking to her as she decides to pay more attention to her phone where she's having a conversation with Augustus.
The camera shots that we tend to see are two shots and over the shoulder. This shows that they are young and spend a lot of time with each other.
The editing that we see over the course of the film would cross cutting. This is between Hazel and Augustus while they spend time on the phone. This is used to show them being young and in love.
Some sounds that the audience come across would be when Hazel says "Is it really 1 am?" to Augustus, this symbolises elements of youth and also them being in love.
The mise-en-scene during the film could be used to show the storyline of the film, the lighting specifically. Dark lighting was being shown and this was when Hazel couldn't breathe. This helps to reflect the storyline because the story is about a girl who was diagnosed with cancer and then she meets a guy who falls in love with her but she tries to tell him not to because she can die any moment. This also helps at the current moment because at the current moment, she stops breathing.
I think The Fault In Our Stars is a good film, this is because it's a true story so you get to understand the story even more and it's a teen film that other teens can watch and understand how life is for other teens.

What is the purpose of a film opening?

1. What Thomas Sutcliffle means is that a film opening must be promising enough so that it leads the audience on to want to watch more of the film and to watch it to the end rather than the film opening being dull and the audience not wanting to watch the film till the end.

2. Some risks of instant arousal mentioned by Jean Jacques Beineix is that the audience could be expecting a bit too much within the first 20 minutes such as cars, motion and  immediate gratification. Jean believes the audience should wait and then the satisfaction will come. If you arouse them early, then you have to answer their questions.

3. A good beginning must make the audience feel that they don't know enough yet so they feel eager enough to watch it through to the end but also at the same time make sure that the audience doesn't know too little because there won't be anything there to motivate them to watch it to the end.

4. The classic opening described by Stanley Kauffmann is the film began with an establishing shot, then there was a close up of a building, then the camera went up the building to the window then in the window going past the receptionist's desk to the private office and they're sat there. From this classic opening you're told the main setting, what the occupation of the hero is and the organization of the world.

5. Kyle Cooper's title sequence to the film Seven is so effective because title sequence wakes the audience up and gets them ready for what is about to happen. The title sequence was the first scene of the movie. It introduced the audience to what was necessary being the story, the nature of the films main character and shown a lot of the things that was due to happen throughout the film.

6. What Orson Welles wanted to achieve with his opening of the film A Touch of Evil was he wanted it not to involve any credits as well as title music. This was because he wanted to plunge the audience straight into the first scene of the film. There was an argument over the decision to have no music. This was because they wanted to have their music at the beginning of the title sequence.

7. What is meant by "a favourite trick of Film Noir" is when the beginning of the film is quite like what we would expect the ending of the film to be like making  it a trick for the audience.

- the begining of the film, opens itself up for# viewers
- allows you to know when the film is starting
- equal to a trailer and is a decision for viewers for if they are going to watch the film or not

Task

These are the orders we can find the title sequence for mainstream films.
The rest of the order would typically be:

  • Actor 2 - star
  • Film title
  • Actor
  • Actor
  • Casting
  • Costume
  • Music by
  • Edited by
  • Producer/Executive producers/Written by
  • Director (Which is always last)
